Physical Education

The PE Curriculum at Fairstead School

Subject Lead: Gavin Raynor

Intent

Our school aims to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We listen to our children wants and needs and provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children’s well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need, how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices.

In EYFS, our curriculum is based on the EYFS Development Matters document for children from birth to age 5.  It is for all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This curriculum is followed throughout Nursery and Reception.

In KS1 and 2, our PE curriculum follows the National Curriculum and incorporates the CQ Essentials Curriculum milestones, allowing children to develop practical skills in order to participate, compete and lead a healthy lifestyle. This ‘threshold concept’ is woven into the PE units we teach.

Each threshold concept in our curriculum is organised into 3 milestones, each covering approximately two years, giving children opportunity to achieve and master them.

Our progressive curriculum has been carefully planned to allow opportunities for making links and building on prior knowledge. Our knowledge categories, which thread through the different units, help us achieve this. These are:

  • Movement
  • Healthy Lifestyle
  • Tactics and Strategy
  • Leadership
  • Personal and social

PE is taught through two timetabled sessions each week.

To support staff CPD, a specialist coach works with one year group each half term, alongside the class teacher. Our sports apprentice also supports the teaching of PE.

Children in Y5 and 6 are taught swimming at the local swimming pool.

Our children in Year 5 have received Sports Leaders training.

We work in partnership with Premier Sports to run a range of sports after school clubs such as multi sports and tri golf.

Our children have opportunities throughout the year to participate in sports tournaments and festivals in partnership with the SSP Town Cluster Sports events.

Impact

Teachers and school staff are constantly assessing children’s progress and understanding through discussion and structured activities, adapting their practice accordingly. The children frequently evaluate their own and their peers’ performance, respond to feedback and recognise their own progress.
